PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
SAP and SAP’s customers are faced with an increasingly complex global environment in which to operate their businesses. This is especially true in the rapidly progressing area of Cloud compliance. The Regulatory Affairs department at SAP Legal is responsible for providing a coherent, consistent, and reliable approach to Cloud compliance at SAP.
The Integrated Regulatory Office (IRO) is a team within Regulatory Affairs, Tech Law & Operations in SAP Legal with the mandate to build a network across SAP and drive a cross-functional, multi-jurisdictional and end-to-end approach to regulatory compliance at SAP for products, services and internal operations.
The primary responsibility of the Regulatory Counsel is to help develop the architecture and provide legal analysis on regulatory compliance projects and help shape the evolution of SAP’s end-to-end compliance management process. This role reports to the Head of the IRO and will work closely and in a collaborative fashion with colleagues in Security, Data Protection & Export Control, Government Relations, as well as Product Development, Cloud Operations, and Operating Lines of Business.

You will work in a strong, supportive team environment and must also be capable of working independently, shaping your approach to successfully deliver on your defined responsibilities. You will collaborate and support other teams who are working together to deliver on SAP’s Cloud compliance needs and those related to our SAP customers. You are a change agent for SAP Cloud compliance with the opportunity to influence the shape of your own work and simplify the path to compliance for other SAP teams - and have some fun along the way.
EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS
- Provide practical, business-minded legal analysis to cross-functional teams on the impact of new and proposed rules and regulations .
- Help lead regulatory compliance projects, including architecting goals, managing stakeholders and surfacing strategic decisions to the right decision-makers.
- Actively shape the evolution of the end-to-end regulatory compliance management process at SAP, including working with cross-functional teams who identify risk areas and develop systems, policies, and procedures to manage and mitigate them.
- Think creatively to provide solutions that are repeatable and scalable.
- Effectively share knowledge and lessons learned within the IRO team and related teams, including through the creation of resources and trainings.
- Work with related teams, especially Government Affairs, SGS, Corporate Legal, Data Privacy and Export Control, Field Legal, and Strategic Business Services, to integrate with existing and emerging compliance practices and tools.
- Advise SAP on working within the law to offer excellent products and services.
REQUIRED SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES
- Brings rich experience and strong expertise in regulatory compliance in one or more fields such as data protection, telecommunication, cybersecurity, export control, encryption, mandatory security certification/audit and law enforcement assistance laws.
- Understands business models and regulatory landscape for cloud businesses.
- Writes well, with experience in drafting policies, and public communications.
- Has demonstrated expertise in structured analysis of regulatory materials, connecting the relevant regulatory requirements to associated areas of product business, cloud operations, and business processes and operations in general
- Excited to work with a diverse group of colleagues from different skills backgrounds
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills. Partners well with clients, maintaining frequent and open communication, to understand their business requirements and the impact regulations have or will have on the relevant product and/or service.
- Has good project coordination skills. In particular, experience with product counseling, compliance projects and leadership in cross-functional teams is valued.
- Ability to lead without formal authority across various organizations, regions/countries, cultures
- Strong team player and networker, able to connect and integrate people with different skills and backgrounds
- Internal stakeholder-focused and service orientated
WORK EXPERIENCE
- 4+ years working as an attorney or in-house counsel, with 1+ years supporting matters related to regulatory compliance.
- Experience in cloud businesses and/or information security is a plus.
EDUCATION
- J.D. or equivalent law degree from an accredited university.
- Further technical degrees or certifications (e.g., from IAPP) is a plus.
